February 9, 2003

Ok everyone, no time to waste! BIG news!

Some of you know that before Kelly's days in at Bloodshot, before she moved to Chicago, before her two solo CDs, and yes, before the Jody Grind, there was An Evening With the Garbageman. However, few of you have had the pleasure of hearing Kelly back in these days. Now, for the first time, you can rectify that!!!

An Evening with the Garbageman appeared a few times on Live @ WREK, a weekly radio show on Georgia Tech's college radio station that featured local musicians. Last week I received an e-mail from Chris Campbell at WREK, letting me know that they were starting a new show, The Underground Recordings, that was going to re-broadcast material from these shows.

I an very excited to let you know that last week, they re-broadcast a show from 9/27/1988, that featured An Evening with the Garbageman. This is the earliest recording of Kelly that I've been able to track down, and it is one of my favorites.

So, if it was last week, why am I so excited? Because WREK keeps an archive of the last week's shows available. That mean that last weeks show (the show is on Thursdays at 8) is still available! So get over there ASAP and grab the show before this Thursday.

The 128kb stereo version (56MB)

OR, if you have a slow connection, you can get the 24k mono version (11MB) Be patient, Kelly doesn't appear til about 15 minutes in, but when she does, it's with 'Long Black Veil', the version I was hoping would make it onto the rumored second Bloodshot 'Executioners Last Song' CD.

If you are a fan from back in the old days, you might also want to check beck every week to see if you might be able to grab other shows featuring you favorite local bands. Here is a list of the Live at WREK archives, which is the source for this show.

More information about WREK, it's lineup, and The Underground Recording show can be found at the WREK web site.

Whew! Ok, in other news:

Alejandro Escovedo is touring with a string quartet! It's certainly a not-to-be-missed show. Kelly Hogan opens with her wonderful guitar player Andy Hopkins and Dave Max Crawford on horns and keys and other stuff.

Alejandro Escovedo String Quartet
at the Old Town School of Folk Music
Friday, Feb. 14th
with special guest Kelly Hogan w/Andy Hopkins & Dave Max Crawford
2 shows: 7:30 pm and 10:00 pm
price: $18, $16 members, $14 seniors and kids

neumu reviewed the Bloodshot compilation 'Making Singles & Drinking Doubles', and had this to say about Kelly's track:

'... Kelly Hogan & John Wesley Harding cover Conway Twitty's
"It's Only Make Believe," which features massively powerful
dual vocals, heart-wrenching melodies, and some delicate
	acoustic guitar.'

There are some photos from the 100th release party here, Kelly and her favorite pooch can be found on page 2!

December 27, 2002

Just a quick last minute reminder for all the Atlanta folks - Kelly is in town and playing tonight!

For those of you in Chicago, it looks like it will be February before you get your next chance to see her...

December 9, 2002

It seems that Kelly is playing another show at the Hideout this week that nobody has mentioned (even the folks at Bloodshot missed this one!) The Struts (Kelly Hogan, Nora O'Connor, Andy Hopkins and Kevin O'Donnell) will be playing at the Hideout Thursday December 12 at 9:00. Cover charge will be $7. This is a benefit for Thax Douglas to publish his new book early next year. Also appearing: Combo Number 3, Steve & Liam, Naughty Candy.

The Hideout folks write this about The Struts: This stellar line up of Chicago's who's who in white soul and song is a band that looks as good as they sound. Eye and ear candy for a good cause? A no brainer. If you don't take your clothes off watching The Struts then something is wrong with you.

Also, the Echo Lounge show in Atlanta on 12/27 is still on!

A clarification about the Bloodshot Records 100th Release party at the Hideout. Kelly isn't doing a whole set, she is only singing one song with the Diesel guys.

Current list of upcoming shows:

October 2, 2002

Once again, here is all the latest news from Kelly...

.
*Playing a few songs with JON RAUHOUSE for his CD release party at the
HIDEOUT in Chicago FRIDAY OCT 11th -- Neko Case and Sally Timms will be
singing also - we all sang on his GREAT new record "Airshow" on Bloodshot
Records.

*Andy and I will perform a small 40 minute set as a duo for a benefit show
NOV 16th at the HIDEOUT, Anna Fermin headlines, more performers TBA.

*I'm playing a few songs at the annual Heather's McAdams Country Calendar
Show at FITZGERALD'S in Berwyn IL on FRIDAY DEC 6th -- I get to do Connie
Smith this year. List of performers TBA, but it's always a star-studded
good time, no matter what.

*I'm playing a little bit at Richard Bicknell's CD release party in ATLANTA
in late January 2003 -- probably the 23rd or 24th, and possibly at the
Variety Playhouse. Anne Richmond Boston will be performing too -- we both
sang on his new record. Stay tuned.

*Tentatively opening for ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO at The Old Town School of Folk
Music in Chicago on VALENTINES DAY Feb 14th 2003 -- as a duo w/Andy.

*singing on folks' records lately -- Janet Bean (of Freakwater, solo release
on Thrilljockey) and Beach Buggy (Sheffield England UK) and a kids record
from Justin Roberts, due out in November.

*I'll have two songs on a new singles collection from Bloodshot Records, due
on November -- "Hanky Panky Woman" (released on a Loretta Lynn tribute 45
w/Neko Case in 1998) and "It's Only Make Believe" (duet w/John Wesley
Harding, recorded in 1999, never released)

*here's a recent review of the Bloodshot Kids record:

http://popmatters.com/music/reviews/various/various-bottleletmedown.shtml

AND FINALLY -- here's some info about a great writing workshop/soul dance
party with my favorite writer, LYNDA BARRY -- please pass it on!

-------------------

Hello everyone! Calling all cars! Get all thee behind me in a line to the
Hideout!

It is my divine pleasure to spread the word about an upcoming benefit event
at the Hideout. Chicago's own "house of love" hosts funk priestess LYNDA
BARRY (author of Ernie Pook's Comeek, CRUDDY, and the new book ONE HUNDRED
DEMONS) for a special mini-workshop! Having taken classes from Lynda for
the past two summers, I can tell you that this is a "swirly, swirly
experience" that is not to be missed. Not just for writing! This class is
good for just feeling good! And a bargain! Such a deal! And all proceeds
go to animal shelters! And there's post-workshop soul music and you get to
pet and smell the delicious aromas of dogs afterwards!

As beat poodle poet Fred Milton would say: #1! RIGHT ON!

Here are the details -- please write back with any questions.

   Lynda Barry @ The Hideout

Check it out twice, and thanks for your time.

Sincerely,

Kelly Hogan

June 12, 2002

Once again, here is all the latest news from Kelly...

.
Sang on new records by:

*ARCHER PREWITT "Three" on Thrilljockey Records (and along with Nora
O'Connor, who also sang back-up on CD, singing with them at their release
party in Chicago June 15th, Empty Bottle)

*SILKWORM "Italian Platinumb" on Touch and Go (not Thrilljockey as errantly
reported by me in an earlier e-mail)

*Just sang two songs ("Ac-cen-tu-ate the Positive" and "The Lonely Bull") on
new solo CD by pedal steel ace JON RAUHOUSE "Airshow" due out late
August/early September on Bloodshot Records.

*Did a tiny bit of back-up vocals on new NEKO CASE CD "Blacklisted" due out
August 20th on Bloodshot Records.

*Did two songs on Bloodshot kids CD "The Bottle Let Me Down" out June 18th.

Playing the Hideout Chicago IL JULY 6th w/Pardner (from Atlanta featuring
Bret Busch) and Nora O'Connor.

Singing w/ Pine Valley Cosmonauts at Old Town Folk Fest July 13th Chicago IL

*Possibly* playing in Atlanta w/Pardner over Labor Day Weekend -- details
TBA.

And other than that, I'm basically hibernating until further notice. I'm
pooped.

Much love,

Hogan

May 10, 2002

I recent ordered the PINE VALLEY COSMONAUTS The Executioners Last Song CD. I was excited to see in the liner notes a list of special thanks to those who had 'done their part for Volume 2' that included Kelly. I haven't heard yet whether or not she has her own track or is doing back-up vocals again, but I've got all my fingers and toes crossed that she has dug up and re-done "Long Black Veil", a wonderful (and pertinent) song that hails back from her pre-Jody Grind days with An Evening with the Garbageman. I don't think this is too far fetched given that "Senor Don Gato" has been recently revived for the upcoming Bloodshot Records children's CD "The Bottle Let Me Down", though it will never as much fun as doing it live. Nothing like a room full of drunk, full grown adults singing "meow meow meow"! If you go see her on the upcoming tour, beg and plead with her to do it, maybe as the encore. It's fun, trust me.

And speaking of reviving ideas, the track "Why Me, Lord?" on the new Kris Kristofferson tribute CD "Don't Let The Bastards Get You Down" has me wondering what ever happened to the idea of a Kelly Hogan / Neko Case gospel album, briefly mentioned in an interview with Kelly some time ago. I'll be asking her about it soon, so everyone keep your fingers crossed!

Ok, enough rambling from me. Once again, here's the latest, straight from the woman herself...

.
Dear friends,

Here's a true story, an up-to-the-minute report from the end of the rope,
straight from the horse's ass, a missive from a woman who keeps dreaming
that I owe Willie Nelson $19,000.00 for a bowl of baked beans...which is SO
crazy, because, as we all know, I owe Willie everything. EVERYTHING.

Another tour begins -- powered by pants ants, the desire to help you all get
to biblically know your neighbor, and to spread the excellent songs around
like so much mulch. Send one proof of purchase of any Charlie Rich or
Arthur Alexander LP post-tour, and I will personally come paint your
smallest bathroom.

Joining us this time is the incredible DANIELLE HOWLE, previewing her brand
new Daemon Records CD "Skorborealis" -- go here for the dope:
http://www.daemonrecords.com/beta/Tantrums3/tantrumsbio.html

For those who can't afford ear plugs (or for those who can only ever find
*one*) this is the tour for you -- ANDY HOPKINS (Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire,
Neko Case, Mr. Rudy Day) will be my right-hand godsend man on guitar and
vocals for this trip, and ANDY MABE http://www.andymabe.com/> will
accompany Danielle (and myself) on upright bass. We will turn the songs
inside out show you all the black stuff inside: "Hear actual words to
actual lyrics being sung!" "See how much more room there is in the van for
tampons, once you remove the drum kit!"

And we will also joined mid- tour (we need a native chaperone to take us
into the spooky wilds of western Canada for the first time ever) by the
amazing Corn Sister CAROLYN MARK and her Roommates -- freshly high off the
fumes of the success of their own CD "Party Girl" -- and their charming,
extra-worthy star-studded tribute CD to Robert Altman's movie "Nashville" --

Here is a review of Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire and Kelly Hogan at FitzGerald's (02/15/02)

Readers and fellow fans wrote me to say that 'Because It Feel Good' was reviewed in Stereophile, though they neglected to mention which one. It had to be February or March though. And there is a little blurb in the music section of the March 2002 issue of Playboy.

October 15, 2001

Hello everybody. Kelly asked me to forward this note in response to being misquoted in a recent interview ...
. Something I do want to pass along in a fan club e-mail ASAP -- about that recent Time Out NY magazine interview, re: growing up in Douglasville, etc. While I *did* say that the name of the town sounds inherently "hicky" (any word with "ville" on the end sounds that way to me -- I blame it on Hooterville from Petticoat Junction...) and I *did* say that I hated living there, I also told the interviewer right after that that I ended up *loving* Douglasville for the woods and cows and country and people. She just didn't put that part in the interview, and it hurt my feelings to sound like I hated D'ville! Not true!

I loved so many parts of coming up there -- the day they opened the magical Kmart on Hwy 5, couple-skating (and making out) to "How Deep is Your Love" at Rollercade West, learning those awesome James Brown cheers from Rosalind Vance in little league cheerleading at Hunter Park, Chapel Hill chorus with Ms. Killian and Ms. LeClair, Hudson's baked potatoes and sweet tea (dag, I wish I had some right now), when Stanley Parker got shot in the eye with a bb-gun in fifth grade and we saved up money to buy him a Evel Knievel Hot Wheels set for Xmas, how Mr. McCall's hiney took up two seats (one for each cheek) at the lunch table every day at L.W. Burnett Elementary, playing in the woods and the creek by Arbor Station and climbing the "Big Rock" -- what a bummer they built the mall, y'all. But then, I'm not much on shopping anyhow.

I could go on and on, but I'll save it for another day. I just wanted to clear that up. It's just a given that you're going to get misquoted or misrepresented in interviews -- it happens ALL THE TIME -- it's just a by-product of out-of-context quotes, etc. I usually try to not let it bother me, because it's not the writers doing it on purpose or anything -- but this particular bit made me feel really cruddy and I wanted to say so. That's all.

Thanks for listening,

Hogan

Here's a review the the new album from Entertainment Weekly.

October 3, 2001

Kelly Hogan sings on a couple of songs on "Southern Rock Opera", the 2-disc CD by the Drive-By Truckers. It is being released right now. Check it out at their web site. One song Kelly sings on is called "Cassie's Brother", a song dedicated to Steve Gaines of Lynyrd Skynyrd and how his sister Cassie, who was already one of Skynyrd's backup singers, got them to let him sit in... which directly led to him becoming a very vital member of the band and the legendary third guitarist... Kelly sings the part of Cassie on Rob Malone's funky tune. The song is available for free download at MP3.com.

Kelly will be performing live and speaking with Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis on Sound Opinions on WXRT 93.1 FM from 10 to midnight on Tuesday, 10/23.

Here are the latest tour updates. Most of it is the same as the last newsletter, but a few shows have been confirmed or cancelled. In a nutshell, October 16-19 Kelly will be on a mini-tour with the CORN SISTERS. Novermber 1-17 she will be touring and co-headlining with SCOTT MILLER & The Commonwealth. (the amazing Scott Miller -- former V-Roys head honcho -- is on Sugar Hill Records, FYI -- new CD called "Thus Always to Tyrants"). Show info below, look for one near you!

The latest newsletter for Schubas just came out, and they have a Bloodshot Halloween Kid's show on October 28th, at 3 pm with Kelly, Danny Black and others.

Monday, August 13 2001

Got a note from the Drive-By Truckers web mistress, who wrote :

there's an amazing song Kelly sings on that will be on The Drive-By Truckers' latest release, Southern Rock Opera. I've posted the MP3 of the song as a bonus before they release the CD. It's called Cassie's Brother and is written about Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister Cassie who was a backup singer for Skynyrd. Kelly plays the part of Cassie. *grin*

Check it out here.

Quoted from the Bloodshot site :

KELLY HOGAN "Because It Feel Good" CD

Kelly sings so good, she can make any song her own. Thankfully, she has good taste too (I mean, who needs someone artfully covering REO Speedwagon songs???) . Her second record for Bloodshot is chock full of all sorts of the cross-genre dramatics reminiscent of early 70's AM radio. We mean that in a good way. Soul, country, pop, all whipped up with her crack band (including guitarist Andy Hopkins, fiddler Andrew Bird, and pedal steel whiz Jon Rauhouse). It's like Bobby Gentry on a Staple Singers jag. Ready for you and yours in early October.

Here is some scoop from Kelly :

Just off the top of my head, here are some newsy-type items for ye and yours:

*new CD "Because It Feel Good" release date Tue Oct 9 2001 Bloodshot Records

*Chicago release show/party slated for Fri Oct 12th, at The Hideout Chicago; two shows, our sets probably 8PM and 12AM, more info later

*taking the summer and September off, but there are a few shows:

-- Danielle Howle, Kelly Hogan, Trailer Bride, Fri Aug 17th as part of Ladyfest, Old Town School of Folk Music, Chicago, 7:30PM

-- Thu Aug 23rd Kelly Hogan & Andy Hopkins 30 minute set at Country Against Racism benefit The Hideout Chicago

*Bloodshot Records is putting out two new compilation CDs sometime next year, and I'm doing a little something for each:

-- I'm doing "Right or Wrong" for their Wanda Jackson Tribute CD

-- and "Rubber Duckie" and "Senor Don Gato" for a children's CD

*no plans to play Atlanta again until at least November, but I'll keep you posted

*October/November touring will be scaled down, band-wise, more of a quiet listening type of show (no gratuitous booty shaking songs, but it won't be a total bummer or anything) -- and limited to the east coast at first (NYC, Philly, Boston, etc.) -- nationwide carpet bombing tour to come next Feb/Mar 2002

*I'm pooped out and extremely broke -- need to grow tomatoes and bartend for awhile to get my strength back and put moolah in the bank -- touring really takes it out of you, physically and fiscally.

*Mike Bulington's last show with us is this Sunday at a wedding in NYC, new drummer for fall 2001 and beyond to be named later...

*Our May tour was looooong and mileage intensive and the gas prices were ferocious! But we want to thank everyone who came to our shows and said howdy, etc.

-- Missoula and Seattle were swell, the folks at WNMF in Tampa are INSANE and WONDERFUL -- we really enjoyed our time at their Tropical Heatwave Fest.

-- Our Chattanooga and Nashville shows were great for us -- check out The Slow Bar in Nashville for a good time (thanks to Hampton the doorman for hoofing down the street to get me the Jagermeister). The Shoney's Inn on Demonbreun in Nashville is also a great place to stay, and very friendly to musicians AND their dogs.

-- One of our favorite shows (again) was at Solar Culture in Tucson on Mother's Day. Thanks to Steven Eye and everyone for great food and loving good time. Our new favorite motel in Tucson (in addition to the atmospheric Congress Hotel) is the 1950's era Flamingo with all the cowboy movie memorabilia everywhere -- they are nice to musicians, dogs are allowed, AND they put us in the Clint Eastwood Suite. Wow.

-- Two of our tour shows should be archived at digitalclubnetwork.com; they did the Minneapolis show at the start of the tour, and the San Diego show, where I was in a really bad mood and we did Journey's Loving Touching Squeezing for a terrible encore -- sorry everyone! But The Casbah and all who worked/attended that show were swell!

-- Albuquerque was a great town and a decent show. Thanks to Lori Jean, and Kamille and her pussy posse for a swell time.

We wanted to let you know that the DCN archive from your performance at Double Door on 6/1/01 has been posted! At DCN we keep all archives posted as long as they are generating interest from our users. Your archive will remain active for at least 60 days; it will remain online longer based on the level of user interest. The more people watch your archive, the longer it will remain on our site. With this in mind, we encourage you to promote your webcast. Let everyone know about your show! Put a link on your webpage! Email your fans! Call your friends! Telegraph your family! Fax your dog!

Kelly on DCN

The last update had a ton of shows, so there hasn't been much to talk about lately. But lots of stuff has been quietly going on behind the scenes.

Opening for the Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire tour will keep Kelly pretty busy through May. Check out the schedule below and get out to see her if she's in town near you.

Kelly has two upcoming shows that will be broadcast via the Digital Club Network. One is in Minneapolis on 5/2, and the other will be in San Diego on 5/12.

Kelly will appear in the Country Fest in Chicago July 1st; a 4-woman show with Anna Fermin, Janet Bean, and Sally Timms. She and Andy are also confirmed as a duo to play Ladyfest in Chicago in mid-August; date and venue TBA.

Kelly will be taking the summer and September off. Her new record comes out in early October; then touring begins all over again. The title for the new record is Because It Feel Good - just like that -- no "s" on Feel. More details to come soon!

I've been saying I was going to do it for ages, now I've started. Check out The Loving Room page for two MP3 files of Kelly, Mike and Alan in action. Two full sets, not available anywhere else! Hopefully MP3s more will follow later this summer.

Here is the latest poop, straight from the horses mouth:

Hello friends --

Hogan here, with a few facts and figures and goings on for the first part of 2001:

BIGGER NEWS

  • 2000 was a big bear of a year for us - Beneath the Country Underdog came out on April 5th, and we spent about 22 weeks on the road, putting our special taint on most of the U.S.A. -- AND England, Norway, Scotland, and Wales. Thanks to every single person who came to our shows and/or bought our CD -- it's in the trenches where the war is won or lost, as my Pop might say.

  • Right now we're getting our blueprint together for our next release (tentatively titled "I'm a Stranger in This Town") and we're heading down to Chase Park Transduction Studios in Athens GA to do the recording in early March. Dag! That's soon! We'll be doing the sessions with famous whiffle baller David Barbe (bassist for Sugar/Bob Mould, Mercyland, Buzzhungry; producer extraordinaire for Son Volt, Macha, The Rock*A*Teens; and savior to every peanut band in Georgia.)

  • Meet the tour-tested, barbecue-loving, near-destitute-in-service-to-their-art, tried and *still* true gentlemen who have kindly agreed to join forces with me for this endeavor:

    • ANDY HOPKINS (formerly of FLAP, also currently of Mr. Rudy Day, Neko Case and Her Boyfriends, and Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire...the phrase "in demand" comes to mind) Andy is from Atlanta, looks reeeeal good in a tank top, and his amazing guitar playing sounds the way one of those old Van Eyck paintings look: meticulously executed, awesomely beautiful, and a little insane. Undisputed humble leader of our soul patrol.

    • MIKE BULINGTON (also of Grimble Grumble) Our extra-large drummer Mike is from Monon, Indiana (popcorn capital of the world, no lie) and likes karaoke, basketball, sweet, sweet doughnuts, and the electric boogaloo. He can pound the hell out of the drums -- but doesn't. Right on.

    • New Englander MIKE STURGESS, on bass, is our newest and youngest member. You might know him from the Hideout, where he is every band's favorite soundman. We first played with him last year at the Curtis Mayfield Tribute Show and have been "So in Love" ever since. That was corny. I'm not sorry.

    • Also joining us on this project are renown pedal steel buddha JON RAUHOUSE (Sally Timms, Chris Mills, Neko Case and Her Boyfriends, Grievous Angels, Pine Valley Cosmonauts,) reverb champeen CHRIS LOPEZ (The Rock*A*Teens) on organ and keyboards, and the amazing ANDREW BIRD (of the aforementioned Bowl of Fire) on violin.

  • Projected release date for this CD is September 4th, 2001 on Bloodshot Records and Tapes -- cross your fingers!

SMALLER NEWS

  • Let's see...we just did photos for the new album with our old drummer friend and now fancy famous NYC photographer CHRIS VERENE (DQE, The Rock*A*Teens, Bach on a Hook.) Check out Verene's work in the last issue of BUST Magazine, and keep your eyeballs peeled for his heart-breakingly lovely book "I'm From Galesburg." It'll kill you.

  • I just returned from a January west coast tour as a member of Neko Case and Her Boyfriends on backing vocals. We had a swell time opening for the Jayhawks, and recording with Giant Sand and Calexico in Tucson, where it was so warm and sunny that I got a mid-winter sweat moustache. We also played one of my most favorite shows of all time at Solar Culture in Tucson with Calexico and their huge mariachi band. It was a packed house of enthusiastic really stinky sweaty folks, and the speeding trains going by out back during the show with their whistles blaring only added to the beautiful mass of sound. I may be coming off like a hippie, but it was cool.

  • I got together with a bunch of folks a couple of Sundays ago at Jon Langford's invitation to record songs at Kingsize Studios here in Chicago for a Death Penalty Moratorium benefit CD to be released soon. Langford, Tracy Dear, Steve Goulding, and Dean Schlabowske (all of the Waco Brothers) were in on the deal, as well as Sally Timms, Chris Ligon, Edith Frost, artist Tony Fitzpatrick, Johnny Dowd, and David Yow of Jesus Lizard. Lots more people will be on the record eventually, and I'm not sure if it's going to be a Bloodshot release or not. I guess we'll all find out together. I was assigned "The Green, Green Grass of Home" -- and as a fan of both Tom Jones and Porter Wagoner, I was happy to serve as best I could.

  • I also just sang on an upcoming record from some Georgia pals of mine, the Drive-By Truckers. I am not kidding when I tell you that it's an original country rock opera about the rise and fall and rise of Lynyrd Skynyrd called "Betamax Guillotine." They asked me to sing the part of Cassie Gaines. I am from the south. I couldn't say no. Not sure when it's coming out -- check out their web site for more information.

TOUR NEWS

  • We are opening for NICK CAVE at the Orpheum Theatre in New Orleans on WED MAR 21st. That is big time. That is scary. We are going to kick his ass! Translation: we are going to play our opening songs while people talk, be thankful to do so, then eat his catering and worship at his evil throne while he does his thing. See: "we are not worthy" Wayne's World 1990.

  • We are doing one last U.S. tour for "Beneath the Country Underdog" (and also previewing songs from the next record) in May, opening for Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire. Andrew's new record "The Swimming Hour" comes out on Rykodisc on April 3rd -- just in time to be your favorite "throw open the windows, do the underwear butt dance" record for Spring/Summer 2001. Bullets would ping off of these songs, they are so well-crafted, oy! It will turn your head around.

Okay, friends. Thanks for your attention. Pass this along to anyone you think would be interested or susceptible to conversion. And we'll see you later.

Yours truly,

Hogan

It's been a while since I've sent out a newsletter; sorry about that. For those of you looking for another source for Kelly info, you should look into joining the Bands on Bloodshot mailing list. It's a very low-traffic list, so it won't clog your in-box. In addition to occasional info on Kelly, you'll hear about the other bands from the Bloodshot label. Head over to the Bands on Bloodshot yahoo group web page for more information and to join.

Those of you who have joined the email newsletter heard about the live webcast of Kelly's show in Minneapolis by the Digital Club Network. If you missed the show, you can still check out the archived show from the 40 Watt Club last yeard. Just click on the link to bands, and select the dropdown menu for 'H', then click on Kelly Hogan and the Pine Valley Cosmonauts.

Speaking of webcasts and the Bands on Bloodshot mailing list, a post from that list led me to an archive of a Kelly Hogan / Neko Case concert on the web from October 2000. There is a real audio video of both Kelly and Neko's sets. If you watch the Neko show, Kelly and her dog Augie join her around 45 minutes into the set. Check it out here on the PrimeTicket web site.

For those of you in or near New Orleans, Kelly will be opening for Nick Cave on Wednesday, March 21. Kelly is very excited about opening this show.

Kelly's latest CD has made it into another Top Ten list, this time at CDNow.

If you are interested in what it's like to be a band on tour, head over to the Bloodshot web page for Kelly's report on their December 2000 tour.

Here are the upcoming shows as reported by the Bloodshot tour page for Kelly:

This is just a quick update for the confirmed tour dates. Please note that the Holiday show was incorrectly listed as being in Atlanta for a few hours today. It is actually in Chicago.

But while I'm here, I'll mention that Kelly's latest album is number 9 on Amazon.com's list of The 10 Best Country CDs of 2000.

No news on the West coast tour yet, but stay tuned!

Monday, November 13 2000

Ok, the most exciting news of the month, for me anyway, is that Kelly has an upcoming show in Atlanta in December! Check out the upcoming shows below for more details, but you local Atlantans don't want to miss this show. Also appearing at this show: Bill Taft of the Jody Grind and Smoke, and Amy Pike. I can't wait for this show!

Here's a review from the Minneapolis/St Paul City Pages, about Kelly and Neko. And Music365 had a mini-review of one of Kelly's gigs during the recent UK tour here.

I don't know how this one slipped past me, but the Bloodshot compilation CD, Down To The Promised Land: 5 Years Of Bloodshot Records, contains a previously unrelased track (I've never even heard it live) from Kelly and the Pine Vallue Cosmonauts. If you simply must own every CD with Kelly on it, head over to Bloodshot and pick up a copy for yourself. Here is a review from the Onion.

While you are over at the Onion, also check out their review of Kelly's latest CD, Beneath the Country Underdog, and why Kelly thinks you should buy it.

I've got a whole slew of news from Kelly. Here it is!

  • We finally have a booking agent -- hot dog! Please contact the foxy and efficient Meggean Ward at Undertow Co. for all your Hogan booking needs and desires.

  • We've mapped out a small west coast tour Jan 17 - Jan 29. Details very soon.

  • We're planning to do my next record for Bloodshot in Feb/March 2001 for release either May 2001 or August 2001, depending on how it all goes. It won't be with the proper Jon Langford version of the Pine Valley Cosmonauts, but the band will include past Cosmonauts Andy Hopkins on guitar, vocals, and song-writing duties, as well as Jon Rauhouse on pedal steel.

  • Andrew Bird, from Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire will play on the new record too. He kicks classical ass on violin. I had the pleasure of singing back-up on his new record, due out April 3rd 2001 on Rykodisc.

  • I "played baritone guitar" and sang with Rock*A*Teens in August backing up Amy Ray on one song for her new solo CD Stag on Daemon Records. I don't know when it comes out, but Daemon's web site might have the info. We recorded at the lovely Chase Transductions Studio in Athens GA with "whiffle ball king" David Barbe producing.

  • I was totally freaked out (in the best way) to be asked to sing backing vocals with Archer Prewitt and Edith Frost on the new Will Oldham/Rian Murphy EP CD from Drag City Records -- a very strange and beautiful record -- out now.

  • We're NOT doing a New Year's Eve show this year -- we wanted to take that night OFF for the first time in about ten years. But I might be performing in Atlanta as a back-up singer at the Star Bar for their Elvis Birthday Bash Sat Jan 6 2001. I always wanted to do that Elvis show, but if time doesn't permit sufficient rehearsal, I'll just be there as a reveler, no singing. And Big Mike Geier (Useless Playboys, Kingsized) is getting married ("sorry ladies") to his lovely Shannon on Jan 1st, and the Elvis show will also serve as his wedding celebration. Y'all come!

  • I just recorded a song for a Kris Kristofferson tribute CD that will be out on an independent San Francisco label soon. We covered Why Me, Lord? with myself, Andy Hopkins on guitar, Tom Ray on bass, Jon Rauhouse on Hawaiian guitar, Andrew Bird on violin, and Edith Frost and Nora O'Connor on vocals at "Kensize" -- Kingsize Studio engineer Ken Sluiter's home studio located a few streets over from my house in Chicago. I thought I ended up sounding like Linus from the Charlie Brown Xmas special, but the label folks liked it anyhow. More info on that release soon.

I know a lot of you Kelly fans are also big fans of Neko Case. For y'all, here is a quick bit on Neko at Esquire. She mentions the possibility of a gospel album with Kelly, which I think is a fabulous idea.

Ok, on to the upcoming tour! Some of these are tentative, so check back as the dates approach.

Got a bunch of new shows to tell you about, including another UK tour. See the list below. There are also lots of tenative dates for a US tour, hitting WI, MN, IA, MO, KY, PA, MD, NY, MA, OH, IL and MI! More details next time.

Anyone who missed their chance to get the Hidden Tracks CD at the release party can head over to Railroad Earth to order online. The release party was a BLAST! It just kept getting better an better with each set. I really like the CD as well, though it's not for the reasons I expected. I was disappointed that all the tracks featuring Kelly were early versions of tracks that were on The Whistle Only Dogs Can Hear (including Arms, Blue Magic, Lucky Nights). While I enjoy these songs, I was hoping for some previously unreleased songs. C'est la vie. Kick Me fans get a Bill Taft song (Black Coat). Brett Busch, who has opened for several of Kelly's CD release shows (and played at the 1999 New Years Eve show at the Clairmont Lounge), is featured on two Parlour tracks. Get this disc for yourself and check it out.

The rumors are confirmed! Chelsea Studio is having a CD release party on Friday June 23rd at The EARL (Atlanta GA; 404-BAD-EARL). Here's the scoop from Kelly:

CHELSEA STUDIO HIDDEN TRACKS CD RELEASE PARTY
KELLY HOGAN
ANDY HOPKINS
BRET BUSCH
DQE
NEIL FRIED
HUBCAP CITY
LYDIA BROWNFIELD
STRAW COLORED LIGHT
COLEMAN LEWIS
(although usually listed in reverse order of appearance, there's no telling what all will happen on this magical friday nite)

Chelsea Studios (now a bonafide facility) used to just be a basement in Atlanta where all the fledgling dookie butt sized bands (Cicada Sings, Kick Me, Flap, Smoke, Opal Foxx Quartet, DQE, Gold Sparkle Band, Rusty Johnson, and a million more, etc...) recorded alot of their first stuff. Through the benevolence of Neil Fried (whose mother owned the basement, and who didn't yell at me when my dog Chainsaw chewed through a Sennheiser headphones cord one time) alot of folks were able to make their own CDs and tapes and get started in the peanut-level of music biz.

This is a very special reunion show of sorts -- old school, and just plain old, Atlanta punk rock dorks -- getting together to celebrate the release of a new CD of Hidden Tracks from Chelsea Studios -- heretofore unreleased songs and performances from the basement days. "Anytime..."

See you there, we hope!

I couldn't find an official home page for the EARL, but here is a map. More details on the contents of the CD and how to get ahold of it if you can't make the show are forthcoming...

I hope to hook up with my source for the Appalaichan Christmas tapes at this show, so those of you who expressed interest in that should hear back from me soon.

The 6/17 show at Mac's in Lansing has definitely been cancelled. So if you call and they say she's still coming, don't believe them.

Here's the scoop on the 2nd Waltz - Benefit for Heartland Alliance Neon Street show on the 21st:

Presented by 93XRT, JAM and The Metro
Featuring the Nicholas Tremulis Band
Wednesday, June 21, Metro, 3730 N. Clark St.
Tickets Available on Ticketmaster, $40
Further info: 312.214.0490 or FirstWaltz@aol.com

It is important to the 2nd Waltz to feature a bill that reflects the rich diversity of American music of our era, continuing the tradition begun with the 1st Waltz, inaugurated with greats like Billy Corgan, Rick Nielsen, Sammy Llanas, and the legendary Rick Danko of The Band. The spirit of the namesake - The Last Waltz - and the memory of Rick Danko - takes on a new life, signifying a beginning instead of an ending by helping homeless teens.

Guest Artists:
* Jeff Tweedy-Jay Bennett of Wilco; Bob Mould; Chris Whitley; Frank Orall of Poi Dog w/House innovator Byron Stingly of Ten City (Poi Dog covered Ten City "That the Way Love Is"
* Rusty Kershaw - The Waltz"Behind The Music" - Kershaw introduced the music of the bayou to the masses and it called cajun
* David Amaram with Cyn Salach
Probably best known for his work with Beat legend Jack Kerouac; to be joined by Salach (a poetry slam originator) in tribute to Kerouac. Amaram was the first composer in residence for the New York Philarhomic under Leonard Bernstein; wrote film scores for "Splendor in the Grass" and "The Manchurian Candidate"
* Sir Mack Rice - legend returns who penned "Mustang Sally", "Respect Yourself"
* Also: Corey Harris, Diane Izzo, Sugar Blue, Blondie Chaplin (Rolling Stones vocalist)

* *****Sitting in with the The Nicholas Tremulis Band are some big music guns: Bun E. Carlos/Cheap Trick; Hubert Sumlin, guitarist for Howlin Wolf, whose upcoming album features guests Keith Richards, Eric Clapton and Levon Helm; Foley, bassist for Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder and George Clinton; keyboardist Aaron Hurwitz of The Band

* This is a true, ensemble bill! The Nicholas Tremulis Band will serve as the house band, each vocalist will do one tune. You can bet with a group like this there will be many spontaneous moments, amazing pairings, incredible music, maybe a surprise or two.

All the proceeds of the concert will go to Neon Street Program for Homeless Youth. Neon Street programs are dedicated to ensuring homeless teens do not become homeless adults.

No new shows to announce, so see the list that went out June 8.

The Hogan/Case Tour has wrapped up. I hope they came to a city near you! Kelly send in a note about a highlight of the trip:

The pinnacle: Freddie Hart saw the McCall piece in the Nashville Scene and sent an autographed photo to the club, with a letter thanking me for covering his song. I remain choked up.

Kelly will be one of the openers for the Indigo Girls for a few shows (check out the Upcoming Shows for dates)! Mike Sturgess will be our bass player for the Indigo Girls dates and Buffalo and Ann Arbor (Tom Ray had a shceduling conflict with his job at Blue Man Group in Chicago). Sturgess played bass with us for our super night of love Curtis Mayfield Tribute back at the Hideout in April (where we raised over $2000 for the marching band at Sojourner Truth Elementary School in the Cabrini Green projects) -- and now we're drafting young Sturgess (who also runs sound at the Hideout) as our newest Cosmonaut.

Bloodshot released a 5YR Anniversary double CD recently. Kelly covers a song by Lambchop's Paul Burch (13 Nights) on there, and sings back-up on a couple of other tunes. There's some great heretofore unreleased stuff from Neko Case, Waco Brothers, Graham Parker, Andre Williams and about a million other bands -- the CD also features a beautiful digipak cover with extensive and hilarious liner notes. Check it out.

I've also heard rumors about a new CD coming out with some previously unreleased material from way back (think Kick Me). Stay tuned for more details! Until then, here are some more reviews y'all can check out :

I'm crazy busy these days, so this will be short and sweet.

First, a box of soundtrack tapes from Appalachian Xmas play that Kelly participated in just surfaced recent. We're trying to figure out if anyone would be willing to shell out a few bucks (lets say $5-10) for a copy. Write back and let us know!

Kelly is going to be playing live on "Somebody Else's Troubles" at 1pm this Saturday on WLUW 88.7FM. Tune in if you are in the area!

Kelly just sent me some tentative dates for a tour she's doing with Neko Case. most dates are tentative, so check your local listings.

That's it! See ya next time.

SXSW has wound down, and Kelly will be hitting clubs in Florida and Georgia on her way back to the windy city. If you aren't in the southeast, don't despair, you can still catch Kelly live! The 40 Watt show this Friday will be web-cast live on the internet! Check out the instructions for setting up here. I recommend trying to set everything up one night this week and try testing it by watching a bit of whatever is available that night.

If you are in Atlanta or Chicago, be sure to attend one of the CD Release parties coming up, and pick up a copy of the new CD.

Kelly was feature in the Chicago Reader Music section this week, check it out.

She'll be on WMLB 1170AM (you can hear it in the Athens/North Atlanta area) at 11:30AM Friday morning 3/24. They're supposed to start playing her record that week -- call in and request!

On a side note, for all the Rock*A*Teens fans, Justin sent me a quick note recently:

Justin here letting you know that we have recorded two albums for Merge records in Chapel Hill ("Baby, a little rain must fall" and "Golden Time"), and are currently underway getting another one together. We played in most major US cities (and one in canada) with ManOrAstroman last spring.

Kelly will be on her way to South-by-Southwest in Austin next week. She'll be stopping in a few southeastern cites for shows. Check out the Upcoming shows for a city near you! Maybe she'll even have a few copies of the new album for sale? (I saw a copy on ebay over the weekend, which went for a mere $15). My copy is in my primary rotation in the CD changer. I've been enjoying it a lot.

A Mudcat fan wrote that a re-release of their Worlwide Mud CD, will contain a bonus track featuring Kelly. Head over to the Mudcat web site for more info.

Kelly has promised to send some 'tour tales' from the recent international tour. In the meantime, here is a review and a page of photos from a show in Norway.

First, a correction. SXSW is in Austin, not Houston. Sorry for any confusion. Still not word on any venues to catch Kelly at, but I'm sure there will be one. SXSW occurs March 15-18 (in Austin, TX).

The new release date for the new CD is April 4th, 2000. There are Atlanta and Chicago CD release parties in March. Check out the upcoming shows below for details. If you missed the link for the new album before, details can be found here.

The "Kelly Hogan and The Waco Brothers Mostly Southeastern tour" starts tomorrow (Thursday). If you are in the southeast, check for a venue near you!

There are lots of great places in the upcoming shows. I for one am very excited to see Kelly out and about again, and hope this new trend continues!

Friday, January 14, 2000

I hope everyone enjoyed their New Years celebration. I, of course, was at the Clermont Lounge for Kelly's show. I got there early to ensure a good seat. Those of you who waited til later to show up, assuming that the show would start late, might have missed the beginning of the set, which started promptly at 10:30. I'll be posting some notes and picture on the web site soon.

If you follow the local music scene, you know who Benjamin is. He was a member of the local band Smoke (along will Bill Taft, of the Jody Grind). He died last year, and local fans and musicians (including Kelly) showed up in Little 5 Points for a parade in his honor. A tribute albums is being recorded (Kelly recorded 2 songs for the album while she was in town over the holidays), and a tribute web page is up. I'll pass on more details on the album as I get them. Check out the tribute web page here.

Work on Kelly's new album is progressing. I got a glimpse of the artwork for the album while Kelly was in town. Two CD release parties will be held in Chicago and Atlanta in March. Bret Busch and The Hots will most likely come up from Atlanta to open the Chicago show. More details as dates and times are confirmed.

Also in March, Kelly will be at SXSW in Austin. More details on dates/venues to follow soon.

Have you been looking for an excuse to do some international travel? Well then I've got good news for you. Kelly, the Waco brothers, Sally Timms, and Chris Mills will be doing a two week tour of England and Scotland! Check out the upcoming shows in the next newsletter.

Tuesday, November 30, 1999

More good news for the Atlanta folks! If you can't make the New Years Eve show at the Clermont, Kelly will be coming through Atlanta again in January on Hogan/Waco Brothers make-up tour. See below for dates and places. There's also a rumor that she will come through again for an Atlanta CD release party later next year. Stay tuned for details!

She put in another cameo appearance at an Indigo Girls concert in Chicago recently. Here's what an article in the Chicago paper had to say :

Ray and Saliers led a four-person band, including a cellist and pennywhistle player, and frequently brought guests to the stage. For the encore, the Girls ceded the spotlight to Chicago singers Kelly Hogan and Neko Case on Dolly Parton's "Jolene"-- with impressive four-part harmony.

Somehow my hosting service lost my whole site! I had a recent backup of this page, but the rest of the site is from April. So some links may be broken or missing. Please email me if you find any problems.

Thursday, September 23, 1999

Bad news folks. Due to an family emergency for one of the Waco Brothers band members, the mini-tour has been canceled. The three cancelled shows were: 9/23 in Nashville, 9/24 in Atlanta and 9/25 in Memphis.

Wednesday, September 8, 1999

Somehow the latest E-Mail newsletter didn't make it out the the web site. I don't know what happened, but I apologize. I've added it below this update.

This is what alot of us have been waiting for - Kelly is going on mini-tour in the Southeast in September. I hope there's more to come after her album is released next year! See below for the who what when and where.

Kelly shot me a quick note about the upcoming album:

Kelly sent me a writeup abour the Prince tribute show she'll be in :

1999: A TRIBUTE TO PRINCE, Saturday, June 19, at the Empty Bottle, to benefit the Minneapolis to Chicago AIDS Ride

"I was dreaming when I wrote this;
Forgive me if it goes astray"
-"1999" by Prince

Members of Chicago's indie rock community will unite to celebrate the music of Prince, to raise money for the Minneapolis to Chicago AIDS Ride and to mark the end of the millennium with a special concert, 1999: A TRIBUTE TO PRINCE, Saturday, June 19, at the Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western Ave., at 9 p.m. Admission is $5.

In April The Sweetest Taboo: A Tribute to Sade benefit concert raised more than $1,100 for Deborah's Place women's shelters. The concept was simple: each band performed its version of a favorite song by that '80s icon. This time we've raised the stakes: each act will perform two hits by the Artist, the Symbol, the Purple One: Prince. For the finale all the performers will be called to the stage to form the Millenneapolis Chorus, leading the audience in a millennium-capping rendition of "1999".

The line-up, from last to first, is as follows:

  • The Millenneapolis Chorus (a "We are the World"-style, all-star ensemble): "1999"
  • The Goblins (masked garage band): a 6-minute version of side 2 of Dirty Mind
  • Mr. Rudy Day (rock and roll): "Erotic City", "Alphabet Street"
  • Kelly Hogan (country siren): "Slow Love", "If I Was Your Girlfriend"
  • Descendro Allegro (music inspired by cars and girls): "The Beautiful Ones", "Lady Cab Driver"
  • The Stereotypes (DJ and divas duo): "I Feel For You", "Darling Nikki"
  • Das Sporten (Bowie-esque pop): "When You Were Mine", "Nothing Compares 2 U"
  • The puta-pons (punk rock): "When Doves Cry", "U Got the Look"
  • Ralph the Puppeteer (punk rock puppet show): "Sign 'O' the Times", "Let's Go Crazy"
  • Ellen Rosner (gal with guitar): "Kiss", "Take Me With You"
  • Cats & Jammers (power pop): "Computer Blue" and "Purple Rain"
  • Susanna Hollywood (Brenda Lee-ish country): "Little Red Corvette", "Manic Monday"
  • Cynthia Plastercaster and John Greenfield (the legendary sculptor's triumphant return to the stage): "I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man", "Raspberry Beret"

All the proceeds from the show will be donated to the AIDS Ride, a bicycle tour to raise upwards of $5 million for individuals living with AIDS and AIDS prevention programs. Chicago beneficiaries of the ride include AIDSCare, Canticle Place, Chicago House, Community Response, Howard Brown Health Center and Sinai Family Health Center. In July several of the performers from 1999: A Tribute to Prince will join more than 1,800 other riders to pedal 500 miles from Minneapolis (Prince's hometown) to Chicago for this important cause.

"This is the right show at the right time," explains concert organizer John Greenfield, bassist for the John Huss Moderate Combo and former bike messenger. "If you grew up in the 80s, Prince's music was part of your life. Back in 1982 he foreshadowed the importance on the new millennium with the hit '1999'. Now, as we stand on the cusp of the year 2000, it is only fitting that we mark the occasion by performing that classic song."

"We invite you to come party like it's 1999," says Greenfield. "Which it is."

1999: A TRIBUTE TO PRINCE will take place Saturday, June 19, at the Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western Ave., at 9 p.m. Admission is $5.
